This kit provides a super mold maker (GA-8) which is the ultimate in fulfilling the needs for a perfect molding compound in picture frame repair.  It sets to a semi-rigid, permanent and exact duplicate mold in about 20 minutes.  It offers high fidelity reproductions, captures delicate details, masters intricate shapes and is flexible enough to allow the reproductions of undercuts.  It does not require vacuum de-airing.  Kit also includes the Dry Casting Compound (GA-14), which when mixed with our special Casting Compound Solution (GA-20), forms a quick setting, durable, and easily carved casting.

DRY GESSO MIXTURE….............…1 lb

A mixture of the finest refined Hide Glue, Calcium Carbonate, and Marble Dust requiring only 15 minutes of soaking in cold water, then gentle heat to prepare for use.  As it is not necessary for each coat to dry, several coats may be applied in a period of 20 minutes.  It dries to a brilliant white with excellent sanding qualities.  When it is polished with Gesso Polish (GA-15) Gold Leaf may be applied and burnished directly over its smooth surface without using bole.  Dry pigment color may be added to the color of the Gesso if desired.  The Gesso mixture, upon cooling, will harden in the container but may be easily softened to a brushing consistency by placing the container in a pan of hot water.  It is best stored in a refrigerator between uses.

This polish is used to bring the Gesso to an extremely smooth surface after all sanding is completed.  Some gilders report that this makes it possible for them to burnish/gild without having to use the red bole clay.

Finest quality gilders brush made from top quality squirrel hair (commonly called camel hair) set into a cardboard holder.  As it is available only in a 4" width, many competent gilders cut it into two sections (1¹/₂" and 2¹/₂").  The 2¹/₂" width is ideal for placing full sheets of Gold Leaf, and the 1¹/₂" is very handy for applying small patches and repairs.  In use it is charged with a small amount of oil by the gilder brushing it lightly over the hair on his head or across his wrist that has previously been prepared with a slight amount of Vaseline rubbed well into the skin.
